Yesterday at the Haldimand Marketing Mastermind, our lunch conversation turned to something almost every business owner experiences at some point — autopilot.
Some of you may know I’ve been writing a book that I’m hoping to publish this week. One of the chapters is about exactly this idea. How easy it is, especially after years in business, to slip into routines that feel productive but don’t actually move us forward.
When you’ve been in business for a while, patterns form. Processes become habits. And before long, you can find yourself spending days — sometimes weeks — busy with tasks that feel necessary but aren’t truly moving the needle in your business.
So yesterday we paused and asked a different question.
What season of business are you in right now?
We talked about how businesses naturally move through seasons.
Some of the ones we discussed included:
-
Building Season – when you’re creating something new
-
Visibility Season – when your focus is getting seen and known
-
Growth Season – when systems and scaling become the priority
-
Stabilizing Season – when you’re refining and strengthening what already works
-
Reinvention Season – when you’re adjusting direction or repositioning
Once everyone identified the season they were currently in, the next step became clearer.
Each person chose one action they could complete this week that would move their business forward by next weekend.
Not ten things.
Not a giant list.
Just one meaningful action.
Interestingly, a couple of people chose tasks that had actually been sitting on their list for months. Because I’ve known them for a while, I asked a simple question:
“What’s actually holding you up?”
It turned out the problem wasn’t the task itself.
It was pricing.
They weren’t stuck doing the work.
They were stuck deciding what it was worth.
So we did a quick group exercise to help them work through that decision. Sometimes all it takes is a few outside perspectives to break through the mental block that keeps something sitting unfinished.
That’s the power of conversations like these. When you say something out loud in a room of other business owners, clarity often follows.
Of course, we also talked about something equally important.
While focusing on one action that moves the needle is powerful, it only works when you still have the bigger picture clearly defined.
Your vision, direction, and goals still need to guide those actions.
But that’s a much bigger conversation — and definitely a topic for another lunch.
For now, the challenge is simple.
Did everyone move their needle this week?
I can’t wait to find out.
